Myth busters

5 menopause myths that need to stop

Reviewed by our medical team3 minute readUpdated month 2026

There's more talk about menopause than ever, but there's also a lot of confusion. Here are five myths we hear all the time, and the facts behind them.

Myth 1

“I’m too young for perimenopause at 38.”

Fact

Perimenopause can start in your late 30s. If you’re noticing changes in your periods, mood, sleep or energy, it’s worth talking about, whatever your age.

Myth 2

“A blood test will always show if I’m in menopause.”

Fact

If you’re over 45, perimenopause and menopause are usually recognised from your symptoms. Hormone levels change from day to day, so one test rarely gives a clear answer.

Myth 3

“HRT is dangerous for everyone.”

Fact

For most women under 60, the benefits of HRT usually outweigh the risks. It depends on your personal and family health history, so it’s a decision to make together with a doctor.

Myth 4

“Weight gain in menopause is unavoidable.”

Fact

Hormone changes can make weight settle around your middle, but it isn’t inevitable. Enough protein, steady blood sugar, strength exercise and good sleep can all make a real difference.

Myth 5

“You just have to put up with it.”

Fact

Menopause is natural, but suffering isn’t compulsory. There’s a lot that can help, from medical treatment to nutrition and lifestyle support.
